 Student Art History Talk
~ Rise Up! Women Artists Throughout History ~
by Abigail Brown
Abigail Brown's Rise Up! Women Artists Throughout History was illuminating, very interesting, and well prepared. The talk was attended by our regular group of art history fans and we learned a lot about notable yet largely "out of the canon" artists such as Lavinia Fontana, Rosa Bonheur, Berthe Morisot, and the revolutionary artists of the Feminist movement--Judy Chicago and the Guerrilla Girls. Following the presentation, there was a great discussion. Much food for thought about what we can do to advance women artists--especially the reputation, interpretation, and integration into art history of the earlier ones. Let's get to work on that, y'all!
 ~ Consider the Wildflowers ~
Art Exhibition curated and organized by Nik Pett
Consider the Wildflowers, curated and organized by Nik Pett, invites you to present artworks that speak about your need for peace and decompression from a busy life. Participating artists were Visual Arts students and faculty from the Dahlonega and Gainesville campuses and a guest artist (Nik's former art teacher from elementary school).

"Consider the Wildflowers" looked great and bore the curator's special touch in her use of signage and color to unify the space, and in her intuitive placement of wall text. Nik encouraged us in the art of contemplation--a gift that few possess in our day and age--but which can be nurtured. Carefully observing the artworks in this show was a starting point in the quest for self-reflection.

TimeFrame is proud of Nik. Besides working on this show, she is getting all As this semester and supporting the Visual Arts faculty in their activities every single day. While gifting her voluntary service to the Department of Visual Arts, she is developing her identity as an artist and consistently learning new skills. Her enthusiasm is contagious!
~ What does an Art Curator do? ~
A Talk by our Curator, Victoria Cooke
Thank you so much to Victoria Cooke for our Curator Talk! We were so engrossed in this presentation that we forgot to take photos! Very informative and it started many art majors talking about future careers! In her invigorating talk, Professor Cooke introduced attendees to the role played by an art curator in museums and galleries. She discussed the expectations, professional preparation, and ethical conduct of art curatorship, as well as her personal experiences. Cooke has held curatorial positions at Columbia Museum of Art (South Carolina), Louisiana State University Museum of Art (Baton Rouge, LA), and New Orleans Museum of Art (New Orleans, LA). For 2024, we are excited about launching a series of workshops where she will participate. Stay tuned, TimeFrame fans!
Campus Field Trip - 2023 Bayeux Tapestry Replica Exhibit
The 2023 Bayeux Tapestry Replica Exhibit was a success on so many accounts. It will be an unforgettable experience. Thank you to the three students who came to the field trip, which was announced at the last minute. Dr. Pozzi Harris was not quite sure if she would be up to giving the talk until the last minute (note the crutches), so she was grateful to those who were able to attend on such short notice. Check the photos in the second row: those are two of the the twenty-two student docents leading other groups of visitors with their knowledge. So proud of you all!

Campus Art Exhibition Installation -
Celebrating Connections: 2023 Hispanic Heritage Month Art Exhibition
Celebrating Connections: 2023 Hispanic Heritage Month Art Exhibition was a fun show to install as a team. (We actually installed on Wednesday, September 20th, not the 19th). This was a special bonding time among the students and with Dr. Pozzi Harris. It was a long afternoon not devoid of small accidents, but we got it done and on time. Yay! We are pros in the making! Thank you to Nik Pett, Reagan Smith, Stephanie McBride, Krista Willey, Hannah North, and Madalyn Courson for their support. It was a learning experience for us all!

Student Art Talk - Tattoo History and Current Styes, by Farren Drummond
Farren's talk on tattoo art was awesome! What a great discussion about the history and current styles (so many and so varied), followed by many interesting questions from the audience. Art history club fans are a consistent crowd! We are so grateful to Farren for preparing this talk and encouraging us to reflect about the social, individual, and aesthetic uses of tattoos through history and in the present day, as well as answering material and practical questions. TimeFrame Field Trip to Botanical Garden
TimeFrame members went to the Botanical Garden for their semester field trip! Thank you to everyone who attended! Special thanks to Emily Kane, President of TimeFrame, for organizing the trip and making sure everyone had a ride. It turned out to be great weather and a fun walk through art and nature. The world surely has amazing natural art! We then went to Mellow Mushroom to recover energy and talk about life. This was a fun break from the stress of the semester and it was energizing to get out. Keep smiling, y'all! More photos coming soon!

Student Art History Talk
Brutalist Architecture and the Atlanta Central Library, by Emily Kane
Emily Kane's talk was very interesting. It was attended by a select group of art history fans, including the following: (pictured left to right) Natalie Phillips, Michelle Perry, Haley Ellard, Bailey Borck, Abigail Moore, Elizabeth Padilla-Brun, Abigail Brown, David Olsen, Emily Kane (speaker), Dr. Ana Pozzi Harris, and Whitney Little. Not pictured: Dr. Elissa Ferguson, who kindly took the photo, and Jeff Morehead, who kindly attended virtually from the Gainesville campus.
The talk was enlightening and provided valuable information and analysis of a style not often discussed. Emily shared images of Brutalist buildings and provided background for the international history of the style. She discussed the relationship between Brutalism and Soviet public housing, Minimalism, and Mid-Century modern. Her core example was the Atlanta Central Library, designed by Marcel Breuer, constructed in 1980, and later renovated between 2018 and 2021, following a controversy about the functionality and associations of the Brutalist style. Audience members made suggestions to strengthen Emily's research. One suggestion was to consider additional examples of Brutalist architecture from the Atlanta area in order to expand the comparative references with local buildings. Another was to consider how society's changing ideas about the function of public community buildings may have influenced the recent renovations made to the Atlanta Central Library.
Emily Kane is a senior at UNG pursuing her B.F.A in Digital Arts and her minor in Art History. She serves as President of TimeFrame UNG Art History Club and she is currently interning with UNG Art Galleries to document and research the Permanent Art Collection. Emily will be presenting a condensed version of this research at the Annual Research Conference, sponsored by CURCA, Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities, on March 24th, 2023.

Her recent work includes the illustrations for the Finding Milo ABC Books, authored by Dr. Christopher Jespersen.  Thank you, Josie, for sharing your story with us!

Student-curated Art Exhibition
An Act of Worship, by Kylie McConnell
Kylie McConnell's invitation to students and faculty to submit artworks to An Act of Worship was this: "We create because God first created; every brushstroke, stitch, or print we make is an extension of the creative arm of the Father and an act of worship in itself. As art students we are trained to recognize the beauty in a landscape or a still life, how to translate that beauty to paper or canvas and share it with the viewer. This exhibition is looking to bring together Christian artists and exhibit the visual translation of their relationship with the Father and allow them to share the beauty of what He created them to do. All media are welcome."
The exhibition featured works by the following artists: Kelly Morgan, Ashlyn Werl, Maggie Hightower, Sarah Louise Decker, Olivia Rainwater, Kylie McConnell, Abigail Moore, Becca Locke, Jeremy Morgan, Ansley King, Nikki Pett, Craig Marshall Wilson, and Johanna Zwemke. The media represented were painting, photography, printmaking, drawing, ceramics, and digital art.
An Act of Worship had a wonderful reception. Kylie McConnell shone as her hard work and inspiration were visible in a show presented with care and insight. Thank you to her family for their support and to the TimeFrame officers for recording attendance, taking photos, and spreading the word about our club. Thank you also to the faculty for supporting the artists, and to the artists for sharing their work. It was a joyous hour! The exhibition showed a range of interpretations, both technical and thematic, of our students' deep connection with their beliefs.

TimeFrame Field Trip
The Historic County Jail and Museum
First TimeFrame Field Trip! We visited the Lumpkin County Historic Jail and Museum. Everyone had a great time and learned a lot! We had an excellent turnout and bonded as a group. We are deeply grateful to the volunteer docents of the Lumpkin County Historical Society, who shared their knowledge and insights generously and answered many questions from the visitors.
The first floor of the Historic Jail Museum contains lots of artifacts collected from local families and resources--butter churns, sad irons, a model of the mint, local rocks where gold was found, a 19th century bed, and the founder of the Dahlonega Nugget. TimeFrame visitors were interested in everything!
The second floor of the Historic Jail is incredible! It is preserved exactly as it was found prior to the building's restoration. We were struck by the heavy iron doors, the walls where removed plaster exposed compact wood and nail structures, and areas showing where prisoners fruitlessly tried to escape. Walking into the past was surely fun!
The Historic Jail dates to 1884 and it is recognized by the National Registry of Historic Places. Besides holding cultural history through the artifacts displayed, the building is a good example of local architecture with Italianate features. The walls used a unique construction method that served the building's intended function--to prevent prisoners from escaping, and the iron doors were state-of-the-art in 1884, when the building was raised.

Nighthawk Fest Spring 2023
We had a very good turnout at Nighthawk Fest - This was TimeFrame's first event as a registered student group, so we had a blast! We offered candy to those who stopped at our table and told all visitors about "what art history can do for you, and what you can do for art history!"
