Student Art History Talk - Space, Time, and the Fourth Dimension:
The Connected Worlds of Art and Relativity, by David Olsen
David Olsen's talk, entitled Space, Time, and the Fourth Dimension: The Connected Worlds of Art and Relativity was a huge success, and the second best attended event this semester. We had thirty-one in-person attendees and two on Zoom. 👏👏👏Thank you to David for inviting students and faculty from the Physics Department, who joined our own Visual Arts faculty and students in Hansford Hall 209. David discussed how, since the early 20th century, artists were interested in non-Euclidean geometry and the fourth dimension, and in Einstein's theory of relativity. He covered the physics concepts using lots of visual aids--an excellent resource for the non-scientists in the room--and then proceeded to explain how selected artists including Wassily Kandinsky, Lazló Moholy-Nagy, Isamu Noguchi, and Roberto Matta visualized these concepts and communicated them in a concrete, visible way, in their artworks. Through the discussion about art, it became clear that the artists did not wish to represent the theories but rather, they intuitively communicated them to viewers through their artistic expressions.
David discussed material that has been published by other scholars--notably, the legendary Linda Darlymple Henderson, who was a member of Dr. Pozzi Harris' Ph.D. dissertation committee at the University of Texas at Austin. However, David's introduction was an excellent way for him to explore these  debates and prepare the ground to eventually research other artists or artworks concerned with scientific interests. David taught the material to himself and presented enthusiastically and didactically to his audience. Along his talk, he also acknowledged some vulnerable or debatable points in his argument, which was refreshing. That is the mark of 💡a true scholar💡--one who can look critically at their own work, so that through this self-critical process, research and writing will be stronger.
We are grateful to all the attendees who had wonderful questions and interventions throughout the presentation and helped David move his argument along, especially, Dr. Sarah Formica. It is evident that David has a village. And that, my friends, is what we do at UNG. So proud to be a Nighthawk.🏆

Student Art Talk - A.I. made Art: Is it Art or Not? by Farren Drummond
A.I.-made Art: Is it Art or Not? was super interesting! Farren 🤠 Drummond, our debate leader, showed us how artificial intelligence programs create images based on verbal prompts entered by users 👉. The images the program created before our very eyes 👁👁  were outrageous or completely different from what we had intended or anticipated.😱 This unintended outcome generated various questions from the audience: where do artistic intentionality and craftsmanship--two cherished values in the art world--go when artificial intelligence intervenes? 🤔 Where is "the artist" in this creative process? Is A.I.-made art a sort of "assisted readymade" similar to the concept introduced by Marcel Duchamp 🤡  in 1916? Can artists use A.I.-made images to make "their own" art? Can the images produced by A.I. serve as inspiration, or as a support for an artist-created painting or digital work? 👩‍🎨👨‍🎨 📲 Or are they stand-alone representations with artistic status in their own right? Other great questions had to do with copyright. Who owns the new image if the A.I. program pulls from images that are under copyright? How could the A.I. user know where the images are taken from? 😳
The debate was fascinating. We should do it again! Thank you, Farren, for your leadership and commitment to the club, as well as for your fun attitude 💃 and collaborative approach. Ah, and the pizza 🍕 was great too! Thank you to our Faculty Advisors for providing pizza and snacks for the ride.

Faculty Art History Talk -  Leonardo da Vinci's Paradiso, by Jeff Morehead
Mr. Jeff Morehead, Senior Lecturer of Art History, gave an enthralling account of his research on Leonardo da Vinci's stage set, called Paradiso. He walked his audience, step by step, through his interpretation of the meaning of Paradiso, arguing a convincing connection with the politics and court intrigue of Milan in the 1400s.
Students were absorbed as they listened to this compelling art historical argument and had lots of insightful questions. The talk was inspiring and well attended, both in person and via Zoom. Thank you to David Olsen (pictured bottom right) for introducing Mr. Morehead, to Michelle Perry for designing the publicity poster, and to Farren Drummond for taking notes. Thank you to all the students and faculty who attended and made this TimeFrame event a success!

🤩 Professor Johnson's talk was awesome! Thank you to all who came to see it and to support TimeFrame. Your presence means a lot! 🙌 We had a nice crowd that filled the room and the extra chairs. 🥳 Johnson talked about why StarWars was revolutionary and discussed his early experiences in the film and animation industry. He also linked StarWars experimental design of props and paintings with historical references, such as samurai armor and World War II weapons. 💯 There were lots of good questions, and the food and drink were readily consumed. 😊 We had two attendees from the Gainesville campus, who joined us remotely. 😍 Thank you for your participation!
